Named for the Urdu word for “color,” the Rūng Film Fest builds upon that concept — reflected light that informs the way we perceive and understand our surroundings — to create a platform that elevates voices of color. Featuring independent films from around the world, the festival showcases the depth of talent from Southeast Asian filmmakers, cast and crew — stories that often go underrepresented in mainstream cinema.

BEHIND THE SCENES

The film festival was founded by the Indus Arts Council, a nonprofit in Houston, Texas, dedicated to celebrating the arts of South Asia. The festival co-founders, Shahid Iqbal and Yousuf Siddiqi, partnered with Pakistani American Hollywood actors Faran Tahir (“Iron Man”) and Kamran Shaikh (“Outer Banks”) to showcase stories through the lens of South East Asian perspectives.

The Rūng Film Fest's inaugural festival took place in Houston, Texas, in 2024.

“This festival is a spotlight on Pakistani filmmakers as a vibrant thread in the American and global fabric.”

— Faran Tahir
